Still Life with Oil Pastels and BABY OIL!!!

Tomorrow I have 2 classes of 2nd graders that will be making a still life using oil pastels and baby oil for the fruit and liquid water colors for the table and background. This all has to be finished in one 45 minute period, and I think it is doable! We'll be using this still life:
Here is my "practice version" of a slightly different set-up.
I always learn so much by doing a sample first. In this case, we are using donated scraps of all different brands of illustration board and I wanted to see how it took the watercolor and how much to dilute the liquid watercolor so it wouldn't overpower the color of the oil pastels. I was also testing this brand of baby oil because I hadn't used it before. I am looking forward to seeing what the kids do tomorrow:))

    1. I am using various types of illustration board (like Crescent) that was donated, but watercolor paper or card stock would work. You apply the oil pastels first, including shading (it doesn't have to be terribly thick). Then, using a Q-tip kids lightly smear the baby oil on to blend the oil pastel colors. I will try to take pictures of the steps as the kids do this tomorrow and post this week.

  3. I can't wait to see the results.
Baby oil and pastels should be a perfect combination.

  4. love it! in high school we used turpentine--yipes, what a disaster THAT was! It's good to know there are other, safer alternatives to blend oil pastels. I need to start using them again and experimenting. My students would love to try them, I think. Can't wait to see the steps and hear your comments. Thank you for sharing! 1. I stopped by your blog to take a peek. Your kiddos did a GREAT job with their still life. I liked your idea of having each group arrange the fruits cooperatively to their liking!!
