<span style="font-size: large;">Years ago a parent gave me a large collection of buttons that I still have not exhausted, even though I have used them to start several art projects. I thought they could be the starting dot.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">To introduce the stripes, David Shannon's <u>A Bad Case of Stripes </u>provides the perfect springboard to discuss color theory (whatever aspect is appropriate to the grade level, i.e. warm/cool, complementary, primary/secondary/tertiary, tints/shades, etc.). This book also is about not letting others influence your choices and being true to yourself, also a nice trait to relate to art.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The project is for each student to start with a 6" X 6" board (or paper) with a button "dot" glued near the center. The student then makes concentric circle stripes around the dot using one of 3 media: watercolor marker painted over with clear water, water soluble wax pastels colored pencils painted over with water, or plain watercolor. Of course, you could use whatever media you like. I chose these because they allowed me to teach primary students how to use a paintbrush correctly with attention to direction of line when using it. Lessons <a href="https://kids-finelines.blogspot.com/2013/09/mr-brush.html" style="background-color: yellow;">here</a>, and <a href="https://kids-finelines.blogspot.com/2011/09/little-things-4-brush-work.html" style="background-color: yellow;">here</a>. I like for kids to experiment to find colors they like to have next to each other.</span><br />

In that park is a bush I think of as "the polka-dot bush" just waiting to be the inspiration for a piece of art to celebrate International Dot Day (Sept. 15, 2017). This day celebrates Peter Reynold's book, <u>The Dot</u>. It is kind of hard to see the blossoms in this photo, but up close they really do look like polka dots!! Also, beyond the fence in the background is the ocean.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwYPBsJJeIPiotxb6Lpljpq4uEOnZ7GOxWiONb0cMoMMpVDZ8bpWoBVG2CfiG3PxivYKNjUqR1R4lkCfMOFyWs3uagmxTUJz2aUF05UNVWW6-AjES0Ebz-bhLkb-84FcXLDqhkJoBsOtnB/s1600/FullSizeRender+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="300" data-original-width="320" height="375" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwYPBsJJeIPiotxb6Lpljpq4uEOnZ7GOxWiONb0cMoMMpVDZ8bpWoBVG2CfiG3PxivYKNjUqR1R4lkCfMOFyWs3uagmxTUJz2aUF05UNVWW6-AjES0Ebz-bhLkb-84FcXLDqhkJoBsOtnB/s400/FullSizeRender+2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">I like to ask students to imagine what this landscape would look like if we removed all the bushes, the trees and the fence. We might have something that looked like this:</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjktFz19a-fEuANCJs4XRd2O708K1kGBY5oOmIiXuDCJVAf7bjjIKPLH1BQLBchnvMoaZMd0rv4IS2Yny9hMT9WYunT3TA-O52gIx1hJJksxmjEcZq0jQ-UD7g-aua_ikVU7WrtM5aO36Y7/s1600/DSCN1264.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="741" data-original-width="764" height="310" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjktFz19a-fEuANCJs4XRd2O708K1kGBY5oOmIiXuDCJVAf7bjjIKPLH1BQLBchnvMoaZMd0rv4IS2Yny9hMT9WYunT3TA-O52gIx1hJJksxmjEcZq0jQ-UD7g-aua_ikVU7WrtM5aO36Y7/s320/DSCN1264.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">This first layer was done with pastels, softened by smearing them with a tissue. </span><span style="font-size: large;">Then we start adding the trees, bushes, walkways, etc. using water soluble crayons(that can be painted over with water if desired) for everything except the front bush. That is done with cake tempera, sponge painted on ( although regular tempera or acrylics would work, too). This is a good opportunity to use art vocabulary: background, </span><span style="font-size: large;">mid-ground and foreground.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0WTIDkzCElE-SInsC6TRrakiXtR-ZUQbdoOHTm1buCIsTRBn7g4S6k9rG54DDdFg4LMEU1eUeY3CM2hzrL-oYpo7-qWjaKDeWFsH0AiEKLQr61fU6Pk4NWf-V1VCZzVJn9rUhhDIybpmN/s1600/DSCN1267.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="845" data-original-width="820" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0WTIDkzCElE-SInsC6TRrakiXtR-ZUQbdoOHTm1buCIsTRBn7g4S6k9rG54DDdFg4LMEU1eUeY3CM2hzrL-oYpo7-qWjaKDeWFsH0AiEKLQr61fU6Pk4NWf-V1VCZzVJn9rUhhDIybpmN/s320/DSCN1267.jpg" width="310" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Meanwhile, the paper for the dots is painted, using warm colors and allowing the colors to run together a bit. This was also done with cake tempera. Branches are added with crayons.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJ3Bx1uhHk4eMeZLnSumkXOdee49F4YkTDEoBk_O9zSACQ7RzO4QdjqpuRcVYHNipfw5nSMKfHtW2rn5uiQMOk-p1ZPEoduVlGore_co1t7K8RjpPQ0ZJNtYaIyOIWO9yftztlq1l7wwoF/s1600/DSCN1269.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="890" data-original-width="896" height="317" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJ3Bx1uhHk4eMeZLnSumkXOdee49F4YkTDEoBk_O9zSACQ7RzO4QdjqpuRcVYHNipfw5nSMKfHtW2rn5uiQMOk-p1ZPEoduVlGore_co1t7K8RjpPQ0ZJNtYaIyOIWO9yftztlq1l7wwoF/s320/DSCN1269.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Students are asked to cut circles of different sizes, trying to include a variety of colors. They can use lids to trace the circles, but they can also cut freehand.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIikR3lCHJCjzRGy_lYZupn8vR0DwQn1l5IDnOEnl2MI3cqG7LPHqjCkmB2Vymq5eNJwS7qplgfpR73ildqwgW4sRwn4WDp49kg9t32nAc5kPakvYF8NNpmYboRX2d0nBl4Ay-NcEgyh4s/s1600/DSCN1271.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="700" data-original-width="807" height="277" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIikR3lCHJCjzRGy_lYZupn8vR0DwQn1l5IDnOEnl2MI3cqG7LPHqjCkmB2Vymq5eNJwS7qplgfpR73ildqwgW4sRwn4WDp49kg9t32nAc5kPakvYF8NNpmYboRX2d0nBl4Ay-NcEgyh4s/s320/DSCN1271.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">The last step is gluing on the circles to complete the polka-dot bush.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMQ3tVSDmxGywrAhqcARZMw93Dz_wIXtu3TgjvnwhuZcvGf32LVlBiqZ1kTHk7F_HCYmGAH75gHTr3Uix3wKSnT3GCRUIYOcB_l4-2Zq-xSLG5qJAIl2GkOqrae-DsZWzQI5rY1og8BUFF/s1600/DSCN1273.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1019" data-original-width="1002" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMQ3tVSDmxGywrAhqcARZMw93Dz_wIXtu3TgjvnwhuZcvGf32LVlBiqZ1kTHk7F_HCYmGAH75gHTr3Uix3wKSnT3GCRUIYOcB_l4-2Zq-xSLG5qJAIl2GkOqrae-DsZWzQI5rY1og8BUFF/s640/DSCN1273.jpg" width="628" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">An option would be to outline the dots with a marker as seen in the example on the right below.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">1) Actually, <u>The Shadow Land</u> by Elizabeth Kostova, was the first book I read this summer. I loved it!! So suspenseful!!</span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">2) <u>The Orphan Master's Son</u> is the book my Book Group is reading for our September meeting. It took me awhile (about 200 pages) to get into it, but I am glad I persevered. It is about North Korea, a country I didn't really know all that much about. With North Korea being reported on at the top of almost every news cycle right now, this book provides background to inform my thinking. Warning: it is pretty brutal!!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"> </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhb0cl1f15nbWKFUTEIxp3B4c7jtkqtZC6fs3IMGRQUoQsm4J1FBiCvihxmLH8oJlIDQWCiQaRWWQcLpetb5zLUzHEtzMAC-XtOYbWynqmZMD43-2wafaedP99-ga9TvW3EJ586HhxV5Col/s1600/sizedDSCN1260.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="761" data-original-width="585" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhb0cl1f15nbWKFUTEIxp3B4c7jtkqtZC6fs3IMGRQUoQsm4J1FBiCvihxmLH8oJlIDQWCiQaRWWQcLpetb5zLUzHEtzMAC-XtOYbWynqmZMD43-2wafaedP99-ga9TvW3EJ586HhxV5Col/s320/sizedDSCN1260.jpg" width="245" /></a></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">3 & 4) Our local high school has incoming 10th graders reading Kurt Vonnegut's <u>Slaughterhouse Five</u> this summer and I was asked to work with a former student as he read it. Talk about brutal!! It actually has parallels to <u>The Orphan Master's Son</u> in the way the novel is constructed, but reading them back-to-back was anything BUT light summer reading!! So I took a break and checked out David Baldacci's <u>The Last Mile</u> from the library. It is a follow-up to his book, <u>Memory Man</u>, about a detective who, due to an accident, has a photographic memory (as well as some other distinctive characteristics). A typical quick summer read!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">5) Right now I am reading Jennifer Egan's, <u>A Visit from the Goon Squad</u>. I am close to half way through it and liking it a lot!</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I drove by school yesterday and they were scurrying around getting ready for our August 22 opening. They painted all the rooms and installed new windows, so you can imagine what it will be like for our teachers to unpack stored materials and get their classrooms ready - all in about a 4 day period!!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I'm not ready to think about that just yet -- think I'll go back to my book!!</span></div>

I just realized yesterday that we will back to school in a month and my stack of books to read is every bit as tall as it was at the beginning of summer!!</span><br />

Kline is true to history for much of this work of fiction, based on the life of Christina Olson, the subject of many Andrew Wyeth paintings, including the well known, Christina's World. It was my book club's pick, and I got the honor of leading our discussion -- what a treat!!<br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgavkBZ5If9gfmhgvtZ5e7bdw2bxXnhVYRUH2z34sPDxd6UxdcPfTH0jmP-rbMRosZAdTyioh1ozE9wnT6alIIG9E7s3gFUnx8jEOoLybWnqmnzCUXctfROVTjVi57FhqTWRTnFEvJJepsr/s1600/sizeDSCN1253.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="800" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgavkBZ5If9gfmhgvtZ5e7bdw2bxXnhVYRUH2z34sPDxd6UxdcPfTH0jmP-rbMRosZAdTyioh1ozE9wnT6alIIG9E7s3gFUnx8jEOoLybWnqmnzCUXctfROVTjVi57FhqTWRTnFEvJJepsr/s640/sizeDSCN1253.jpg" width="640" /></a></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I say camouflage because each little painting started with a cut-out from a cereal box or catalogue that was glued in the center of the 6" square illustration board. I had a lot of precut recycled cut-outs so kids had quite an assortment to choose from. I tried to have some with several colors and some with only 2 or 3 for kids who wanted something easier.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgENDhVvIrQp96BSmw7VcXjNadJzDJ0544TwR9zZWIwoTYWgqSjTkLGRbGiqlzbL45Vsd0LojHn8YeYHEluUnJIZd8WUreB5olMeNj6Q7P8_bY0opBpkVY9MthybfTBWL_Daf-3Epz9X6JQ/s1600/DSCN0210.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="693" data-original-width="1026" height="270" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgENDhVvIrQp96BSmw7VcXjNadJzDJ0544TwR9zZWIwoTYWgqSjTkLGRbGiqlzbL45Vsd0LojHn8YeYHEluUnJIZd8WUreB5olMeNj6Q7P8_bY0opBpkVY9MthybfTBWL_Daf-3Epz9X6JQ/s400/DSCN0210.JPG" width="400" /></a></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Then, using Sharpie pens, the kids extended lines from the cut-out to the edge of the board wherever two colors met. You can see what I mean in the above photo. Where the red changes to white, that is the start of one Sharpie line. Kids just moved their finger around the edge of the cut-out, looking for where one color met another.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I also made the rule that one Sharpie line could not cross another.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivO7nYBe98OmyMxvQ4kzHskmYr2Si6mnQKyQ0LPEbNUmOvbHG2NQyStvgxUupf1uqV2Xbjo_liF4Ytx5mWYve2vyd8p8z8MiXYL7h3ZSvdFAsHz5LDxfIXNsX21ODtsDWEh97cDv5UF2vz/s1600/DSCN0195.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="726" data-original-width="759" height="612" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivO7nYBe98OmyMxvQ4kzHskmYr2Si6mnQKyQ0LPEbNUmOvbHG2NQyStvgxUupf1uqV2Xbjo_liF4Ytx5mWYve2vyd8p8z8MiXYL7h3ZSvdFAsHz5LDxfIXNsX21ODtsDWEh97cDv5UF2vz/s640/DSCN0195.JPG" width="640" /></a></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Then students used water color to try to mix the exact color on the cut-out and extend that color out to the edges of their board. I also said they, as artists, might choose to leave some sections white.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqKM2rwGggV4SxomV6RBZHjW7cIOtAZVrOPJRzU6BCv_lE2RA8qYm6sTm6rs8cfT-jFabfNEGgeAdaZZK0lMNjT51wuf_sYWY0gIiCMQXLeUdwbsgFCbKk4gjphSzEc4De6zR2lwkSYYmE/s1600/sizeDSCN1255.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="523" data-original-width="800" height="418" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqKM2rwGggV4SxomV6RBZHjW7cIOtAZVrOPJRzU6BCv_lE2RA8qYm6sTm6rs8cfT-jFabfNEGgeAdaZZK0lMNjT51wuf_sYWY0gIiCMQXLeUdwbsgFCbKk4gjphSzEc4De6zR2lwkSYYmE/s640/sizeDSCN1255.jpg" width="640" /></a></span></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">You can see in the first painting in the above photo how this student worked to achieve the variations of blue. These were done by 2nd graders and the concept of making tints using more water instead of adding white was a new skill for many!!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEWplroW7vRzIXNPgXBqNjNzuQ3s8zqH4ceOGnlnLWEygjjijTJDo0_kW1yZMYIleMs-H9M9qhjyDmwnNNODsoQ6zNk14so0vF85ml-UQ9Tey2pJUTxfdjzppKwM0pLiITobg6BHj70UXP/s1600/sizeDSCN1256.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="534" data-original-width="800" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEWplroW7vRzIXNPgXBqNjNzuQ3s8zqH4ceOGnlnLWEygjjijTJDo0_kW1yZMYIleMs-H9M9qhjyDmwnNNODsoQ6zNk14so0vF85ml-UQ9Tey2pJUTxfdjzppKwM0pLiITobg6BHj70UXP/s640/sizeDSCN1256.jpg" width="640" /></a></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I love the graphic variety in these little gems!! I also told the kids that one of the reasons we were doing them now, was to remind them that they could easily do pictures like these at home during the summer using recycled cut-outs to start them out.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">This is one of those absolutely "no fail" projects where everyone is successful. I think they did a GREAT job -- as I look at the photos above I am having a hard time finding some of the camouflaged shapes and I know where they are!!!!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Happy Summer!!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

We started with building several equations using Unifix Cubes and Pattern Blocks.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Then I read them the book, <u>Two of Everything</u>, to really cement the idea of doubling a number.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">In this book there is a magic pot that doubles anything that falls into it. So this was an opportunity to teach kids how to use oil pastels to make a 3-D looking pot using shading techniques. See <a href="http://kids-finelines.blogspot.com/2011/03/light-source-for-1st-grade.html" style="background-color: #6fa8dc;">here</a> for more directions.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Next, students made two sets of matching objects or people to represent their doubles equation. For people they used paint to print the faces and then crayons and Sharpies for the rest of their drawing.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRKvfwvsd_o8d4AdBPjW2ACRv5BVy-NXMQ8JNh6Tg9QBFRt1YRKBTRP3aCzYwvUNZ1_85bIrYPafubQ54WADshKuGW4kahfqEmCdMKFuH8wbQB5sVEg2GtijNNHca_arq5bM2UW99o5mQm/s1600/editedDSCN1236.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="396" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRKvfwvsd_o8d4AdBPjW2ACRv5BVy-NXMQ8JNh6Tg9QBFRt1YRKBTRP3aCzYwvUNZ1_85bIrYPafubQ54WADshKuGW4kahfqEmCdMKFuH8wbQB5sVEg2GtijNNHca_arq5bM2UW99o5mQm/s400/editedDSCN1236.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">I actually started thinking about this awhile ago when I drove by this wall art in the neighborhood.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXP6KUgUoqen6owFsD17JNGYeyiGPvhsYGQF5j2O_WqQWyGZoG_z2Ln5A3pUhYSMWoobFABcOvb1K3R7178IilxWASJkgHJ9oxMkOssc0VPr2WRVLbUy1eUYjzhbGD2wESVRXm9kOY4Z3r/s1600/IMG_0063+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="432" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXP6KUgUoqen6owFsD17JNGYeyiGPvhsYGQF5j2O_WqQWyGZoG_z2Ln5A3pUhYSMWoobFABcOvb1K3R7178IilxWASJkgHJ9oxMkOssc0VPr2WRVLbUy1eUYjzhbGD2wESVRXm9kOY4Z3r/s640/IMG_0063+2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The lesson starts out with the kids creating the background so that it can dry by the time they are ready to glue on their coin rubbings. This background is wet on wet watercolor.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFD8RWkzgFR2Z_iVBy_B56_zreCVCxsGufJ2nNDhNcooSTcqQetPLowesbWRM17gWBcgJ9gvSOrj1sBQDbusxnxw2vwAx0y0gZIVTf3Xie4JPgm_I7LzCnFekI_QETQZSOC6CJWbBP-GXW/s1600/sizedDSCN1229.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="337" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFD8RWkzgFR2Z_iVBy_B56_zreCVCxsGufJ2nNDhNcooSTcqQetPLowesbWRM17gWBcgJ9gvSOrj1sBQDbusxnxw2vwAx0y0gZIVTf3Xie4JPgm_I7LzCnFekI_QETQZSOC6CJWbBP-GXW/s400/sizedDSCN1229.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Then students get to the real work. Using my favorite PRANG colored pencils, they rub the heads side and the tail side of various quarters, noticing all the details. Working in small groups, and using small magnifying glasses, each group records everything they see on their coins on a record sheet.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhchHzXqLgpW32cFQtRHv5j9j_VnCSB1G280OkyMlumTJI-yIMl2tI0LDjX-F8wwSGGVfR1sT0U2bKK0CgrUCQnv_I1pnaENA7K-_QONdKBiMp1RPWMtBXhczPUOlnUnWMEmnvvMiWpYm0_/s1600/DSCN1227.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="482" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhchHzXqLgpW32cFQtRHv5j9j_VnCSB1G280OkyMlumTJI-yIMl2tI0LDjX-F8wwSGGVfR1sT0U2bKK0CgrUCQnv_I1pnaENA7K-_QONdKBiMp1RPWMtBXhczPUOlnUnWMEmnvvMiWpYm0_/s640/DSCN1227.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYYVjReQuJGmCikkM4LfODRe_UBRPYvsu-eINigtxeqT0otbTVYK9hZj_Y-qnv6UKRIxietv7DSYGq8TEabVN6U_SIpzgMFFABeEx4su02XPi0F2S5DTFjZnwslp5xpSaGtmOIwZgfWhYo/s1600/sizedDSCN1228.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="520" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYYVjReQuJGmCikkM4LfODRe_UBRPYvsu-eINigtxeqT0otbTVYK9hZj_Y-qnv6UKRIxietv7DSYGq8TEabVN6U_SIpzgMFFABeEx4su02XPi0F2S5DTFjZnwslp5xpSaGtmOIwZgfWhYo/s640/sizedDSCN1228.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOqNrDMNRtgDIGcyzT4NRBRjtmMkWZ1auzOy7uIsd0pNA07Ng6njDD_-HS0dPnaWb0ib6O0fBKlYnw70KOeih3aT1YY9ke5CsfK9cle4-55hK95PIjFsC8pBT7DL-JBjFx7SbX8SVe3B_9/s1600/DSCN1231.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="560" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOqNrDMNRtgDIGcyzT4NRBRjtmMkWZ1auzOy7uIsd0pNA07Ng6njDD_-HS0dPnaWb0ib6O0fBKlYnw70KOeih3aT1YY9ke5CsfK9cle4-55hK95PIjFsC8pBT7DL-JBjFx7SbX8SVe3B_9/s640/DSCN1231.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Later we record their observations in chart form and discuss them. We actually do this for all coins at another time and have the charts to compare what kids find on them all.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiduU3tVkrb_GugoXHraFe9PbubWecJ2EFUzSLBK6is2Vs_Jtkqrn3oMnrncTbEy5Yb2eG6JR6_5kvOalBwY2ZbPPbSI-nTDC28bWHJNgQAWgh80B25cgNtTBSYepsxAPg5Ewe8aQ2RdQaY/s1600/SizedDSCN1237.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiduU3tVkrb_GugoXHraFe9PbubWecJ2EFUzSLBK6is2Vs_Jtkqrn3oMnrncTbEy5Yb2eG6JR6_5kvOalBwY2ZbPPbSI-nTDC28bWHJNgQAWgh80B25cgNtTBSYepsxAPg5Ewe8aQ2RdQaY/s400/SizedDSCN1237.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Quarters are such great coins to study since they have started being minted for each state. Depending on the age and skills of your students you can decide how much research to have them do as they discover phrases on some of the state quarters. For example, the Hawaii 2008 coin has Hawaiian words that kids can look up on the computer to find the translation. For those of you who are curious, the Hawaiian translation is "The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness." Nice, huh??!!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9rEQjxkQUgdCiAHx5BqhJQksQbpzQhDAPNwUu6O2Gd30FGciqsHRVqCAMMpuektEyGcFl4cLcnvFYrH147EBPptG_2shhrpXQAQKoV719N9bdbk6DSLbrHeupK53biwHWMtgDgIkozyGJ/s1600/sizedDSCN1232.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="396" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9rEQjxkQUgdCiAHx5BqhJQksQbpzQhDAPNwUu6O2Gd30FGciqsHRVqCAMMpuektEyGcFl4cLcnvFYrH147EBPptG_2shhrpXQAQKoV719N9bdbk6DSLbrHeupK53biwHWMtgDgIkozyGJ/s640/sizedDSCN1232.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">You can also decide whether to have kids label their rubbings and how detailed to be. Another option is to have students color in each state on a U.S. map to match the color of their rubbing:</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqg-yUcUQC-KyUu5LPFLNe9qvhPeJ99AcgEMkrKh1P7yhChkezzUigZW3vsJv7uXoV51AUIOD1zh1MuBu3S95Puv8f1U8enIUdnvaVm48AlQQLTk25yyal6CUGZ5ZXPtbKSTfITrWCtGpX/s1600/sizedDSCN1235.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="380" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqg-yUcUQC-KyUu5LPFLNe9qvhPeJ99AcgEMkrKh1P7yhChkezzUigZW3vsJv7uXoV51AUIOD1zh1MuBu3S95Puv8f1U8enIUdnvaVm48AlQQLTk25yyal6CUGZ5ZXPtbKSTfITrWCtGpX/s640/sizedDSCN1235.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">I am getting ready to this with 2nd graders and will share some of their art results as they are available. I should mention that I also plan to extend this lesson in math to augment place value/tens and ones work that these students are doing.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Happy Presidents' Day -- hope you enjoy celebrating on your 3 day weekend, too!!!</span>Christie - Fine Lineshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10418114130566362780noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1370879428515287328.post-7444661252482793052017-01-24T15:21:00.001-08:002017-01-24T19:42:07.420-08:00Pastel Snow People Mural<span style="font-size: large;">Here in California we are having our version of a cold weather winter (rainy and in the 50°s). So it seemed a good time to work with 2nd graders on shading spheres to make snowmen!!</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Some students made larger snowmen/women and others made smaller ones. As they went out in the hallway to add their people to the mural, the smaller people were placed to appear further back, giving the landscape the appearance of distance.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The last step was to add snow, which they did by stamping small circles using the handle of a paintbrush and white tempera paint. Of course, we did this on our coldest day of year so far!!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">This lesson, like the last one I posted, was based on the book, S<u>nowmen at Night</u>.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">As an aside, when I left school after finishing up the mural I went for a quick walk between the thunder showers to share with you. We had a bit of wind the night before, thus the fallen palm fronds.</span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">For this 2-day project, 3rd Graders started by observing the snowmen in the book, <u>Snowmen in the Night</u>, noticing how the light shining on the spheres of the snowmen created a 3D impression. We also noticed how the snow was shaded in various places. There are many scenes in the book to observe how large snowmen appear closer and are placed near the bottom of the page, and smaller snowmen placed higher on the page give the appearance of distance. We discussed foreground, mid-ground and background in landscapes.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">I demonstrated how students could cut a 9" X 12" piece of white drawing paper to create 2 pieces that would be their snow and a center piece that we would use for one of the snowmen. I had some extra smaller pieces of white paper for those who wanted to make a smaller snowman.</span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Students positioned one of the side pieces above along the bottom of their landscape paper and the other one overlapping it on the other side to create two hills of snow, one behind the other. A few kids had trouble with how to do this spatially. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>

<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">They shaded the back hill where it met the front hill. (See examples further down.)</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />

<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Next we used the center piece of drawing paper to make a snowman, shading one side where the moonlight would not be hitting it. The only tip here is to ask kids to use the side of their pastel and not to press too hard. They blended the pastel with their finger. I had an assortment of blues, purples and grays for them to choose from.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmr5CUfACLJpSsIZ7ElYA72R1c7vegZQBxpf8J8CnFqi6P8zuAV1i8l1lQOBtDd4SVtOa3tU4HSu28Xk3S3ybkXP4EzYy4GkLBgTgYShdES9VNV9ZlUSgpj3tAoweYOuZWTTeTfb-65qW-/s1600/sizeDSCN1186.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="482" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmr5CUfACLJpSsIZ7ElYA72R1c7vegZQBxpf8J8CnFqi6P8zuAV1i8l1lQOBtDd4SVtOa3tU4HSu28Xk3S3ybkXP4EzYy4GkLBgTgYShdES9VNV9ZlUSgpj3tAoweYOuZWTTeTfb-65qW-/s640/sizeDSCN1186.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Students used their scraps to color accessories, using plain crayons. I had them use glue stick to affix the snow and snowmen before they started the caps, scarves, etc. They colored and added those as they went. They used pastels to make a moon in the sky.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgErITJdot8gBesw5oGJvm988HzvC4waYL0VEJ6zzYbsS6InWVlc0Xwk5qMJr0naAlRPu0bXffhBt-cEvEPPNeusa4HrlZC7V1dNalX_mF1jqCTu8C4UK9ahv9bdq5dgn8-f35mxWHGID1h/s1600/sizeDSCN1188.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="564" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgErITJdot8gBesw5oGJvm988HzvC4waYL0VEJ6zzYbsS6InWVlc0Xwk5qMJr0naAlRPu0bXffhBt-cEvEPPNeusa4HrlZC7V1dNalX_mF1jqCTu8C4UK9ahv9bdq5dgn8-f35mxWHGID1h/s640/sizeDSCN1188.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">On Day 2 students used white tempera and pastels to create trees in the distance. They dip the pastel in the paint and, starting at the bottom of the tree, zig zag up and down from left to right. When they no longer see white, it is time to re-dip. They move up the tree making each layer a bit shorter, until they reach the top of the tree. This is a fun technique that can actually be used to make a whole snow scene, people and all!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Of course, kids invariably found their own way to make trees, which is just fine!</span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">The final step was to add snow. We used the white tempera and applied it by stamping with a cotton swab. I cut those in half, since they really only need one side. Might as well conserve when we can!!</span><br />

Can you find the little guy wearing a sombrero? LOVE IT!!!!Christie - Fine Lineshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10418114130566362780noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1370879428515287328.post-75792981708305598382016-10-23T18:31:00.000-07:002016-11-23T09:42:57.656-08:00Fall Leaf Art - Audition<span style="font-size: large;">Fortunately I have some great trees right outside my home that I can visit to collect motivation for this leaf painting project. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtyoQdQEegDlNFL_NtYQbm0JW08UN3Ef4k8rZbzWnvDiuiPT98MIFmZtey0JB5zXYd19D0srs3CoytCHRNi1expXTEWqg9maRjsJTfZbUH1Z9VRWeCzQg3MMbgHv789HnY28D2buzitKGj/s1600/Fall+leaves.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtyoQdQEegDlNFL_NtYQbm0JW08UN3Ef4k8rZbzWnvDiuiPT98MIFmZtey0JB5zXYd19D0srs3CoytCHRNi1expXTEWqg9maRjsJTfZbUH1Z9VRWeCzQg3MMbgHv789HnY28D2buzitKGj/s400/Fall+leaves.jpg" width="381" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"> Last year I used them for this totally different kind of lesson (<a href="http://kids-finelines.blogspot.com/2015/10/color-options-for-fall-papier-mache.html" style="background-color: #e69138;">here</a>).</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">This year kids will be using the leaves to <span style="background-color: #ffe599;">experiment</span> with mixing primary colors to make the colors they see in the real fall leaves. Part one of the lesson is to encourage students to keep some colors clear and strong as they paint, rather then ending up with a muddy mess. To do this they start with 4 blobs of yellow in each of 4 quadrants (good math vocabulary) of their newspaper. They have the other 2 primary colors (red and blue) to mix in with the yellow to create their fall colors.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0CjsvsRLLAorFoLjo7usKzL-VLu0tN3cvvDuCbaFHmBNcPydqMYLPt2ym0P5M9vMdUgoUffW-zSQeZH5Hf3HD0jwZb6OZlAsnbm11vZ7VBVa8ocTMGQrGBJXzPrHcFCSXQFnt2gBfrC2q/s1600/sizedStep+one+leaves.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0CjsvsRLLAorFoLjo7usKzL-VLu0tN3cvvDuCbaFHmBNcPydqMYLPt2ym0P5M9vMdUgoUffW-zSQeZH5Hf3HD0jwZb6OZlAsnbm11vZ7VBVa8ocTMGQrGBJXzPrHcFCSXQFnt2gBfrC2q/s320/sizedStep+one+leaves.jpg" width="310" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">I like using newspaper for this because a) it provides some texture to the leaf, b) it allows me to reinforce that we can recycle and use found papers at home rather than buying paper to use, and 3) it is really easy for little hands to cut.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-pRwAfgvKaIBinStaqs16EjJamMPYdr9KuS-f9UjDVv4VQRtD-6xWVkCXvyru8ageNG5tgg9Tqn3dF3siBKlImapYyG0woNx-CuZp1d7qCeRp2X4-XMSOUcRAffccaTbB1t_qRynwpBuF/s1600/fall+colors.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="626" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-pRwAfgvKaIBinStaqs16EjJamMPYdr9KuS-f9UjDVv4VQRtD-6xWVkCXvyru8ageNG5tgg9Tqn3dF3siBKlImapYyG0woNx-CuZp1d7qCeRp2X4-XMSOUcRAffccaTbB1t_qRynwpBuF/s640/fall+colors.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">On a separate sheet of newspaper kids can experiment with mixing any combination of the three colors, discovering that this is where brown comes from!! Once one discovers it, they all catch on and the muddier the better! Success for everyone.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiksf1zDIKLdKMf2Ol5TpIxnNa3fF3kUQvWIlivgD4vZ8YECmxCXxaQIUuBKPUsiv819nfXIc_c3kULgRhcKq3Ks2dBLk8doJqvXG3NZWUo7rBpUXj4Wv5zpaSzUOhu1GeC7Hz51lC-Y21O/s1600/Browns.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="556" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiksf1zDIKLdKMf2Ol5TpIxnNa3fF3kUQvWIlivgD4vZ8YECmxCXxaQIUuBKPUsiv819nfXIc_c3kULgRhcKq3Ks2dBLk8doJqvXG3NZWUo7rBpUXj4Wv5zpaSzUOhu1GeC7Hz51lC-Y21O/s640/Browns.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">While these color sheets are drying, each student gets a piece of card stock to experiment with watercolors. This can be done on the same day or a second day, depending on your time constraints. I actually like to do these on two different days, making a whole lesson on the differences between painting with tempera/or acrylics and watercolor. This is also a good time to let kids experiment with what happens when you blot watercolor with plastic wrap, sprinkle salt on it, or spray it with water drops.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvI1xnsnPQom8ruEFqjAzLQeKoNx9dX6HSXBuj_UY7OS8FgTda2t5CDnC_ncTUQERv-Dr1CcL2SFrSgdoZ9e8gY-gzucTDzS1K9XcIzsFEJovOUzxjFH5p-u6QY64Iqpi0xG-0t9oJO0A2/s1600/DSCN1160.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="552" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvI1xnsnPQom8ruEFqjAzLQeKoNx9dX6HSXBuj_UY7OS8FgTda2t5CDnC_ncTUQERv-Dr1CcL2SFrSgdoZ9e8gY-gzucTDzS1K9XcIzsFEJovOUzxjFH5p-u6QY64Iqpi0xG-0t9oJO0A2/s640/DSCN1160.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">When all the painted papers are dry, the composition begins. Kids can trace around the real leaves to make the leaves they will cut out. They can also paint the back of real leaves with various colors (I used white here) and make leaf prints.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-size: large;">When leaves are cut out, students can experiment with composition. I like to talk about size, direction of leaves, and overlapping, depending on the grade level. Sometimes I like to talk about setting one leaf apart (that is why there is only one white leaf in my sample) like Van Gogh had just one white iris in his painting of irises.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3WcYI0Gvb_ZtGZPEnkLH_HQqxEB07a8LFE6lIq32O8SBFZO9qIsLIxq_3Uew2Tm_KEzY89RcDotErauFu79_fqQNjAVHRPnoz11KjzDDTcqctqbUEsC7np03bDIyMzpWVSP0kOQIWYif7/s1600/sizedDSCN1162.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3WcYI0Gvb_ZtGZPEnkLH_HQqxEB07a8LFE6lIq32O8SBFZO9qIsLIxq_3Uew2Tm_KEzY89RcDotErauFu79_fqQNjAVHRPnoz11KjzDDTcqctqbUEsC7np03bDIyMzpWVSP0kOQIWYif7/s640/sizedDSCN1162.jpg" width="542" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">I am thinking about having kids cut out around the blue area and gluing the whole thing on another piece of board, like this:</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIAXibuI0kOVEXJ-PFMacVbTn-USgRMQ_xSKFCYc5OLXp6YSWiTpkkd8GkMIw4-LqRfQO6Ff6cOZrHMsRg7VgHybt7jLKxlvh4Lnn-dCgLsAZ7CIM_SiYzgn6_ZWgNznVGFcECLznRAHih/s1600/sized+Falling+leaves.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="516" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIAXibuI0kOVEXJ-PFMacVbTn-USgRMQ_xSKFCYc5OLXp6YSWiTpkkd8GkMIw4-LqRfQO6Ff6cOZrHMsRg7VgHybt7jLKxlvh4Lnn-dCgLsAZ7CIM_SiYzgn6_ZWgNznVGFcECLznRAHih/s640/sized+Falling+leaves.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">. . . but I haven't quite decided about this step yet:) That is what auditions are for!!</span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3ZnXWgCXavtOAq7QskNFyqlvKr0n9_vMzz9mcPMgU2-OFsXxiixm6z3DuerPbWxwN0vxaHNe6EoyWoVLQdo0z88V-BI-ZKO-Z3_Fxek9f2dUg47Pk25FKxhsWdKWL_4qIbS9VFtZSiLjR/s1600/sizeIMG_0040.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="368" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3ZnXWgCXavtOAq7QskNFyqlvKr0n9_vMzz9mcPMgU2-OFsXxiixm6z3DuerPbWxwN0vxaHNe6EoyWoVLQdo0z88V-BI-ZKO-Z3_Fxek9f2dUg47Pk25FKxhsWdKWL_4qIbS9VFtZSiLjR/s640/sizeIMG_0040.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> They used a color system of cool colors to create the path and warm colors with a cool center to design their dots. The actual lesson can be found <a href="http://kids-finelines.blogspot.com/2016/09/another-international-dot-day-audition.html" style="background-color: orange;">here</a>. The only addition I made to that lesson was to have students use their 4 fingers (not including their thumb) to measure the width of their pathway. That gives the path continuity when putting the segments together.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgd09ei0iVSA6CKyh-V44GfHtVVxgVRGUW-4_4u0GQ-OSoy1hvB279Q_SJw6RxGux1kqMv7pdBtY0JISsdpbGjWGLlhW1gCFThfXW3-RmzBK100rUDqDxNNZ4EiIHUxqF0Dx-5_IWIAedyo/s1600/sizeDSCN1143.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="396" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgd09ei0iVSA6CKyh-V44GfHtVVxgVRGUW-4_4u0GQ-OSoy1hvB279Q_SJw6RxGux1kqMv7pdBtY0JISsdpbGjWGLlhW1gCFThfXW3-RmzBK100rUDqDxNNZ4EiIHUxqF0Dx-5_IWIAedyo/s640/sizeDSCN1143.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Kids LOVE seeing how the segments can be attached in different ways! This is fun for them to do on the rug in groups before it actually goes up on the wall!!</span><br />

There are just so many places you can go with dots that I find it hard to decide which ideas to use in the classroom. Here is another project that I am thinking about for this year. It is a collaborative effort I am calling Dot Pathways.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8BR1xwWDhO8B74v5vw9mVCDiOEAasXdvqkPcymY0gomx63NtsS6aOL2C89PsM152tr3MsodQC5GwVV_3jUeYj-ItgKmPBAb9dvtBFsSh1YzaqAFo3Fh52m4DLxkkjtEfJOWkXfiOGAKY_/s1600/sizeDSCN1135.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="356" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8BR1xwWDhO8B74v5vw9mVCDiOEAasXdvqkPcymY0gomx63NtsS6aOL2C89PsM152tr3MsodQC5GwVV_3jUeYj-ItgKmPBAb9dvtBFsSh1YzaqAFo3Fh52m4DLxkkjtEfJOWkXfiOGAKY_/s640/sizeDSCN1135.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">This lesson requires simple materials which you can see in the photo below. I like Crayola watercolor markers.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The pathway starts with two watercolor marker lines creating a "channel" within which students will draw and design their dots, using either warm or cool crayons. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibwL0LOyiG5CYKDzegc8gDGyR2wgEcBFoxN-ZMnIZby_UzvVhKiJ5qc0PWCTuULOJbXzLzXUlZqXGZY8dRr8nsOTZxwbbLsT3heo4Jjc7ZgcdzV6JA4pRsvdxw_dU6iqzl9Yl6xZj6boxI/s1600/sizeDSCN1123.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibwL0LOyiG5CYKDzegc8gDGyR2wgEcBFoxN-ZMnIZby_UzvVhKiJ5qc0PWCTuULOJbXzLzXUlZqXGZY8dRr8nsOTZxwbbLsT3heo4Jjc7ZgcdzV6JA4pRsvdxw_dU6iqzl9Yl6xZj6boxI/s320/sizeDSCN1123.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgs6WpzAYbT7pDeDu2G_SFYNhg2j3ea9R5_yRv_wb8AUvFrWRTvvC0C-L_xI07r_jFinMWk5QKKojCWgvE8WpX7zu3MiJwwJ7g-qqadORwNYxqakm3qyELL8t3Wr_alsLGDRx3s7JRT4O3r/s1600/sizeDSCN1124.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgs6WpzAYbT7pDeDu2G_SFYNhg2j3ea9R5_yRv_wb8AUvFrWRTvvC0C-L_xI07r_jFinMWk5QKKojCWgvE8WpX7zu3MiJwwJ7g-qqadORwNYxqakm3qyELL8t3Wr_alsLGDRx3s7JRT4O3r/s400/sizeDSCN1124.jpg" width="392" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Notice that the marker lines are either warm or cool and all but the very center of dots are the opposite (warm/cool).</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><span id="goog_1239027364"></span><span id="goog_1239027365"></span><span id="goog_233755827"></span><span id="goog_233755828"></span><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Once the dots are designed, kids use a paintbrush and clear water to draw the watercolor marker into the pathway and the background. This is a good opportunity to talk about using just the tip of the brush and which direction to draw out the water. Each year I get engrossed in thinking about all the wonderful possibilities of tying art lessons to this fabulous little gem of a book, and this year is no exception. You can see previous years' lessons <span style="background-color: yellow;"><a href="http://kids-finelines.blogspot.com/2012/09/dots-dots-and-more-dots.html">here</a></span>, and <span style="background-color: yellow;"><a href="http://kids-finelines.blogspot.com/2014/08/dot-day-is-getting-near.html">here</a></span>.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The first idea I am auditioning for this year is this simple (and quick) lesson that will introduce oil pastels and pinch-tearing all at the same time.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZop6O5ZxTJxEDyVSLv3Dr6sfW-0lANSPvNAq6JMdP8zS5nrVtFM4YCvp1ozRimAdpHsGUvu3aG39aXXxmB2x1fv1ZepVRuoKhsxtV1arzUiybxGsOU-rcWU57lbN0rKG856hOSxOG5Ahyphenhyphen/s1600/sizeDSCN1137.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="562" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZop6O5ZxTJxEDyVSLv3Dr6sfW-0lANSPvNAq6JMdP8zS5nrVtFM4YCvp1ozRimAdpHsGUvu3aG39aXXxmB2x1fv1ZepVRuoKhsxtV1arzUiybxGsOU-rcWU57lbN0rKG856hOSxOG5Ahyphenhyphen/s640/sizeDSCN1137.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">The supplies are simple: 9 X 12 construction paper pre-cut into fourths, some oil pastels, and a piece of background paper on which to glue the shapes. Pentel is one of my preferred brands because the pastels are soft and easy for students to use with good results.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSrB6ShwtGZn3VAmLEWA5gdSLO-tFlw92dEsfwNAK_y917VfFshk0DC498OGHUOQzieWrj07VV0yFTZt-OUjvg9UlXx9SUqK4jhPT2Fat9eLxN0Dav_rx2JETouKwY98bLz8L7XH185M0l/s1600/sizeDSCN1131.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="596" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSrB6ShwtGZn3VAmLEWA5gdSLO-tFlw92dEsfwNAK_y917VfFshk0DC498OGHUOQzieWrj07VV0yFTZt-OUjvg9UlXx9SUqK4jhPT2Fat9eLxN0Dav_rx2JETouKwY98bLz8L7XH185M0l/s640/sizeDSCN1131.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">The first step is to "pinch tear some dots". I would have kids practice this first using scratch paper. You can see a lesson on this<span style="background-color: white;"> by clicking</span><a href="http://kids-finelines.blogspot.com/2011/07/pinch-tearing-organic-shapes.html"> <span style="background-color: yellow;">here</span></a><span style="background-color: white;">.</span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="290" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgOs8a1oRc1TPmWB4zWdMBguj8zT59MK6P4VPMoBYLZR8CSMjvmpIupAf-s98nay9JJZsBzoh3qNJKFJBSrI8cdOtik7lOEuk5LjcQ4xgikgsFUPQjR1z4c-LAlPE59uJDVr-0JCyZPi3P/s320/sizedDSCN1130.jpg" width="320" /> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Once students have a few "dots" torn they start coloring areas using either warm or cool colors, using a color wheel as a guide to their thinking and planning. I like to have them overlap areas of color just a little to see how the colors interact and what new colors appear. Using white to tint some of their colors makes for some nice experimenting, too. You could have students use any color system, not just warm and cool.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlCo1zhkBCDipZt6qKYSbSqYPMcVd3rT3gItZrEgmhJfdV1a5USSG83yNFKwBRJbwXImU9Vi6b0wZzFoubdpkRnIEEL35yF7bLbpCBFzQLrJ4pbJmvD3FDWOlk6atold2-S4Ddt-GsUoiE/s1600/sizeDSCN1133.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlCo1zhkBCDipZt6qKYSbSqYPMcVd3rT3gItZrEgmhJfdV1a5USSG83yNFKwBRJbwXImU9Vi6b0wZzFoubdpkRnIEEL35yF7bLbpCBFzQLrJ4pbJmvD3FDWOlk6atold2-S4Ddt-GsUoiE/s320/sizeDSCN1133.jpg" width="248" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">I had intended to use just black construction paper, but decided I liked the variety of using lighter colors of paper, too. I also thought about and tested using baby oil and swabs to blend the pastels slightly, but found that that didn't really add value (except, perhaps the lovely clean aroma of the baby oil in a classroom!) to this project. That is one of the advantages of auditioning a lesson first, before using it in the classroom!</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiemeGvqS4xAnS7vbZ7ycBeqJ9NGk-Yw8bA4dNrZajd6F3A1YxYZYLp8E3YmeLdJmGBkljTC6oL6yfqPBWoriNVF-WiJT2ggp3kZNyH_Ge_TFqrlbaYAuPc0-v9I0Bf8i9opNV-juyKQyaV/s1600/sizeDSCN1132.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiemeGvqS4xAnS7vbZ7ycBeqJ9NGk-Yw8bA4dNrZajd6F3A1YxYZYLp8E3YmeLdJmGBkljTC6oL6yfqPBWoriNVF-WiJT2ggp3kZNyH_Ge_TFqrlbaYAuPc0-v9I0Bf8i9opNV-juyKQyaV/s640/sizeDSCN1132.jpg" width="514" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">The final step is to glue the dots on a background paper (either plain or painted if I want to get a little messier), overlapping edges just slightly.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">I am actually thinking about doing this as a collaborative project that will cover a HUGE area, with hundreds of dots!!!</span>Christie - Fine Lineshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10418114130566362780noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1370879428515287328.post-83848153139474325302016-08-11T16:55:00.002-07:002016-09-03T15:32:32.828-07:00Art Audition - Footprints in the Sand (or Tea Bag Art)<span style="font-size: large;">I think one of the most fun parts of teaching anything (but art in particular) is trying out new ideas with students and seeing the results. For me, these don't have to be original ideas (but it's fun when they are) just new to me or the first time I have tried them with kids. And I ALWAYS want to "audition" them first at home before introducing them to the classroom. It seems that this is the time of year (2 weeks before school starts) when a lot of these ideas start percolating. I thought it would be fun this year to share with you some of these "art auditions!"</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Here we go with the first one:</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><u>Footprints in the Sand or Tea Bag Art!!</u></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Last January, following joint replacement surgery, I was told to walk EVERY day, and I have been pretty consistent in following through. While walking in my local park, on the sand and gravel pathway, I noticed the variety of footprints imprinted in the path and thought, "Wouldn't kids have fun with this!"</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9lDvdHbHJdFSwsKVkXlHnEQjCgMkeagaWUpkMiw7-kTtB128sBZdvtfqhyJWWNSsk5A_lqTqAkXKICMdskr1zaCBXWz3yX9Qyaezx-wCVnL7CT-oxEGxz93CBuECUIIIRbwr6ZDjtnuLI/s1600/sizedIMG_0004-4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9lDvdHbHJdFSwsKVkXlHnEQjCgMkeagaWUpkMiw7-kTtB128sBZdvtfqhyJWWNSsk5A_lqTqAkXKICMdskr1zaCBXWz3yX9Qyaezx-wCVnL7CT-oxEGxz93CBuECUIIIRbwr6ZDjtnuLI/s640/sizedIMG_0004-4.jpg" width="610" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Step one is to create the sand. Great use for all those used teabags after making ice tea!! Coffee would work, too. Pressing lightly on the bag creates a light beige, leaving the bag a few seconds before lifting up results in a darker tone. Good time to talk about <span style="background-color: #f9cb9c;">value</span>.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSrueUHDtNJHPKIA9AIl9Z21kiugTBTPQDvjjnKchIVR7NwaSun3S2anhG49fyJi3LsWeAKAzJba0aRBoPrKqD2Jv68gfh6t4SueKTrPUBF5AbE29s3XTR5xK9IFYsjElbW2UYIcnbtWol/s1600/sizeDSCN1109.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="490" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSrueUHDtNJHPKIA9AIl9Z21kiugTBTPQDvjjnKchIVR7NwaSun3S2anhG49fyJi3LsWeAKAzJba0aRBoPrKqD2Jv68gfh6t4SueKTrPUBF5AbE29s3XTR5xK9IFYsjElbW2UYIcnbtWol/s640/sizeDSCN1109.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Overlapping the tea bag prints is pretty important for an over all sandy look.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBGh1lYejcqkFCkBl3fe5q8IcaJg-8Gk_TyDII2JORbxS7nj4k7dNYs6Tbo0_CXi7AAZVZZkdqmhW1MSp85-pZiTcuWuc7JLvGXfY-olmKBFpZk-SKODuJCu1wEAJtBe83fEdpCrgBOqrj/s1600/sizeDSCN1111.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBGh1lYejcqkFCkBl3fe5q8IcaJg-8Gk_TyDII2JORbxS7nj4k7dNYs6Tbo0_CXi7AAZVZZkdqmhW1MSp85-pZiTcuWuc7JLvGXfY-olmKBFpZk-SKODuJCu1wEAJtBe83fEdpCrgBOqrj/s640/sizeDSCN1111.jpg" width="474" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">I didn't even wait for the background to dry before printing the soles of a few shoes. In the classroom, kids can trade shoes to make a variety of sole designs. I used pastels that I dragged across the sole and then just printed it on the damp background. If you want to get a little messier you could try this with paint!! I didn't think I wanted to try cleaning paint out of all the grooves, though. **Have plenty of water and paper towels for kids to clean their shoes after printing.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJV1ukFhQrItm0OaQ6GBZmMiyD87Oct7YYStaWtT1_fSeyCI8QCgUN5AsPdVka-Yg3COCHLdqlSWxPHg_TyYIpXUN0oGNvAp7IYUNxYRj4Msg3RM_qGNXN3KB3Q187e-1NddcHLqHJA6dr/s1600/sizeDSCN1113.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="496" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJV1ukFhQrItm0OaQ6GBZmMiyD87Oct7YYStaWtT1_fSeyCI8QCgUN5AsPdVka-Yg3COCHLdqlSWxPHg_TyYIpXUN0oGNvAp7IYUNxYRj4Msg3RM_qGNXN3KB3Q187e-1NddcHLqHJA6dr/s640/sizeDSCN1113.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">For younger students I would probably stop after they had covered their "sand" with footprints. Older kids could use black Sharpies to outline the patterns on the shoes, as in the example below.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgD8TzYvFH2HEXtEfyhhlhkYAxZNfOqlih8h6g_02JgkoVYhYhsXgh80jbDvD8_upb5UsO0lcR4_ogLvLy5-YQtuD5AUveYO6dAtzOmgtv2KlohoorYbyRI5CYvgABIJB4bP19zdjHLcVC6/s1600/sizeDSCN1115.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgD8TzYvFH2HEXtEfyhhlhkYAxZNfOqlih8h6g_02JgkoVYhYhsXgh80jbDvD8_upb5UsO0lcR4_ogLvLy5-YQtuD5AUveYO6dAtzOmgtv2KlohoorYbyRI5CYvgABIJB4bP19zdjHLcVC6/s640/sizeDSCN1115.jpg" width="488" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">In my last post I had this photo of a local mural where a boy is looking towards the beach through his binoculars. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhczNr5yZ5jy20gI0hiG3E2OsQumJ2nKADdlw8WtwL0mu2ouGgpW_yk5Grh5sGv4GxEJyjKhu0hPK1Z3vC0ZR0Dwx-rP5On2sp7Lq0mD0kilpGA8DQ8nQjQFi3QG4d-gM0bo3WaMZWXkso/s1600/DSCN1074.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhczNr5yZ5jy20gI0hiG3E2OsQumJ2nKADdlw8WtwL0mu2ouGgpW_yk5Grh5sGv4GxEJyjKhu0hPK1Z3vC0ZR0Dwx-rP5On2sp7Lq0mD0kilpGA8DQ8nQjQFi3QG4d-gM0bo3WaMZWXkso/s640/DSCN1074.jpg" width="332" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">I think I would probably have kids discuss this mural, which is on a wall that is walking distance from school, as well as Dr. Seuss', </span><u><span style="font-size: large;">Oh the Places You'll Go!</span></u><span style="font-size: large;"> , as a part of this lesson.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Sounds like fun, huh??!!</span><br />

Before art started popping up on walls everywhere, this thoughtful painting appeared overlooking Wilshire Blvd. in West Los Angeles. I still notice it every time I pass by, although the signs around it are crowding in these days!! It often gets me thinking about the difference between reading a book and "reading" a piece of art. What a great conversation to have in the art room!!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">It is hard to see the painted scaffolding that the little painter in the lower right is standing on as he paints by the word, "sentence."</span><br />

The first is in a courtyard at the Cypress Inn in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California . It overlooks diners having afternoon tea in the patio restaurant.<br />

I have been thinking it might be fun to discuss these two paintings with students, comparing the similarities and differences. Then I would give a photo of a well known man/woman to the kids and have them create a portrait within a setting of their choice. Afterwards we could have another discussion examining the similarities and differences of their paintings. It is fun to see such creativity. I have been doing a lot more walking now that school is out and thought that in the next few weeks I'd share some of the murals I have stumbled upon.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">This first is on the wall of a restaurant I was at with my mom recently. It is called Spitfire and is located in their parking lot. It is a cool, casual place with a lot of old airplane memorabilia inside. Fitting, since it is located by our local small airport. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"> These next few are on walls of the fabric store where I shop. At first there were just a few near the back door:</span><br />

</div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Whether it is Memorial Day, Veteran's Day or the 4th of July, it is fun to celebrate the red, white and blue. This is a quick project requiring pastels, paper, paint and a few pieces of cardboard.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEge8h2QxsyNnoCD1PLTic_M-aBQjR-xgxAarqLnXrjI6rLr1Iv7AvncxJhAe4LpbO_lhYwz45o6yEmvVN-3lSkyKyUS3j9KgoIlvsmD3QRaYFih_fiNveYK-tBp2LTUjX4VGEjNg_G2KBqn/s1600/sizeDSCN1078.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEge8h2QxsyNnoCD1PLTic_M-aBQjR-xgxAarqLnXrjI6rLr1Iv7AvncxJhAe4LpbO_lhYwz45o6yEmvVN-3lSkyKyUS3j9KgoIlvsmD3QRaYFih_fiNveYK-tBp2LTUjX4VGEjNg_G2KBqn/s320/sizeDSCN1078.jpg" width="305" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Artists use one triangle and chalk to create a five-pointed star. This is good for talk about, not only how you go about positioning the triangle five times to create the star, but also for the starting point of the chalk marks (on the triangle, brushing out) and conversation about the direction you "swipe" the chalk (from the triangle straight out as you work your way around the point of the triangle). <u>It is a good idea to practice this on newspaper first!</u> If you think the triangle method is too hard for you group, this can be done with a full star pattern instead.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhorRSr0Xv_zH2oIz81f8CjTR7RMekQvwjURUsyW96mObRtJmd5X8JHTOG2XszgHLW52_B3_drWVMkUz4xUZLQAKfJB_VvJEayvuUF2YhOSBrJkWO8VPciIfNucZPXPOnomTyDusY3ON7hR/s1600/sizeDSCN1086.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="482" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhorRSr0Xv_zH2oIz81f8CjTR7RMekQvwjURUsyW96mObRtJmd5X8JHTOG2XszgHLW52_B3_drWVMkUz4xUZLQAKfJB_VvJEayvuUF2YhOSBrJkWO8VPciIfNucZPXPOnomTyDusY3ON7hR/s640/sizeDSCN1086.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">After making the initial chalk mark, students swipe the mark again with their finger, smearing the chalk outward, so the star looks like it is shining.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8A7_JMMJyDyg21Tm5nHYjTBF5l21OcxpSnqE3MK91sJQ4XHVHjg3zsRh8Ry5Gm1tEHrHUr89rEK2SqJj5gHMpCGDTZv1mQ4KlNqIjV_MK-BN21L7Ss7lLDZC6FEqM65HreBi116H73iLa/s1600/sizeDSCN1085.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="488" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8A7_JMMJyDyg21Tm5nHYjTBF5l21OcxpSnqE3MK91sJQ4XHVHjg3zsRh8Ry5Gm1tEHrHUr89rEK2SqJj5gHMpCGDTZv1mQ4KlNqIjV_MK-BN21L7Ss7lLDZC6FEqM65HreBi116H73iLa/s640/sizeDSCN1085.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Once the stars are done (I like the kids to make various sizes using small and large triangles), it is time for some stripes.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">These were done by dipping the edge of a piece of cardboard (we use scraps of illustration board) in tempera (acrylic works, too) and "printing the stripes". I emphasize, "straight down, straight up" to avoid sideways smears!!</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2kTeJcWGM4q_-ByuyfNmJO0k9eFc5XEE0w3rqErK2AmZJt_j8TvYhjXy_jJfmPzG22uvQvmZjkXg8SolVZ1iOiwN-joAGgeBuCCbfleKLWzpW7wBHnGVIV7Bb6UI4S2an6IqK1InbjTmp/s1600/sizeDSCN1087.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="540" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2kTeJcWGM4q_-ByuyfNmJO0k9eFc5XEE0w3rqErK2AmZJt_j8TvYhjXy_jJfmPzG22uvQvmZjkXg8SolVZ1iOiwN-joAGgeBuCCbfleKLWzpW7wBHnGVIV7Bb6UI4S2an6IqK1InbjTmp/s640/sizeDSCN1087.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> You can decide whether to have your kids stick with vertical/horizontal stripes like the one above, or let them print however they like, as in the example below.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiY-XMPVoX5Qd5S7ZgorOneJp-BGyYHjROeTB2LJ1BoVUqkqc3dDKr4CEsHu19MERAFqzHLw5ZZAFVXW9_L9_ZyWAIua9juNf3ioQLnqG0AbE1rI1RRxImfEBCMxIji3DGMNlXfcY1TDl7R/s1600/DSCN1089.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="476" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiY-XMPVoX5Qd5S7ZgorOneJp-BGyYHjROeTB2LJ1BoVUqkqc3dDKr4CEsHu19MERAFqzHLw5ZZAFVXW9_L9_ZyWAIua9juNf3ioQLnqG0AbE1rI1RRxImfEBCMxIji3DGMNlXfcY1TDl7R/s640/DSCN1089.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">The motivation for all of this was our local National Veteran's Cemetery (seen across the street from the Federal Building), which is adorned right now with thousands of American flags at the gravesites and along the inner roads. I love driving by this time of year. Hope you all have a meaningful holiday as summer nears!</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">To make the process a bit game-like and give the kids a written model to follow, we started by drawing two cards, one for the numerator and the other for the denominator. This would become "their" fraction.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Using grid paper and colored pencils, students used 2 complementary colored pencils to color squares to represent each part of their fraction. This lesson was done in small groups so I was able to spend a lot of time using the mathematical vocabulary AND having students use that same vocabulary as they explained to me and each other what they were doing.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">When the squares of their "whole" were colored, they cut it out and glued it onto a background. We used 6" X 6" illustration board, but any sturdy paper suitable for watercolor would do.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Next came the watercolor. Students painted shapes that emanated out from their colored pencil areas. This was a good time to talk about brush control and how to lay the brush flat and pull to get straight lines.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">They start on Day #1 painting tints, using acrylic paint -- white and the color of their choice. We also had some colored tissue paper that kids could paint with white to create tints. The advantage of using acrylic is that students can experiment with keeping the paint thick (like Van Gogh).</span><br />

I <span style="font-family: inherit;">now have a brand new hip, <span style="font-family: inherit;">have recuperated nicely, and am ready to start back with students this week!!! Anyway, I do ha<span style="font-family: inherit;">ve a few things to share. First, a little bit about the last project 3rd graders worked on . . .</span></span></span> </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: large;">Around 80 years ago, when our school was built, a frieze depicting Theodore Roosevelt's life was installed outside the door of the main office. That area is now located inside the office, the result of remodeling. We believe the frieze was carved by sculptor, Robert Merrell Gage, who was responsible for quite a few local public works of art, as well as a few national treasures, as well. From 1928 to 1958 when he retired, Gage was the Chairman of USC's Fine Arts Department.</span></span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Third graders explored the frieze, discussing all the details that they found. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPxOL1UrKwYNzvCUMPTTkRY7ubmNnd_0mNd9KJmnRI3qoikGWWQ6DfLL8beGdLxgnQ8VJ6xYF40wKgLClkmcT5wG6Z_vtZ6b2CwM7UskOY9XlXIktfnL9IVYNA5WwZG10T_VNEcFIsws-y/s1600/sizedDSCN0601.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="512" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPxOL1UrKwYNzvCUMPTTkRY7ubmNnd_0mNd9KJmnRI3qoikGWWQ6DfLL8beGdLxgnQ8VJ6xYF40wKgLClkmcT5wG6Z_vtZ6b2CwM7UskOY9XlXIktfnL9IVYNA5WwZG10T_VNEcFIsws-y/s640/sizedDSCN0601.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> They helped each other and used crayon to trace over the indentations of the carving, making replicas of some of the items. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNg_bzf9oUZT_NUcFwJFcSqhlzdRw1IA4bM-QOgUZr7DKkJWehd6Ah4cBddUI0Aat4OASbXPgetdfCIKl2z3mNaiNNkiq9cOPD135Lj_23QsPmWFn483-lXfx-GBvJ5F-zRpZseCgMT2qz/s1600/sizedDSCN0902.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNg_bzf9oUZT_NUcFwJFcSqhlzdRw1IA4bM-QOgUZr7DKkJWehd6Ah4cBddUI0Aat4OASbXPgetdfCIKl2z3mNaiNNkiq9cOPD135Lj_23QsPmWFn483-lXfx-GBvJ5F-zRpZseCgMT2qz/s640/sizedDSCN0902.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> Then, using centimeter rulers they measured parts of their own drawings and then other parts of the frieze.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">I love when students can become actively involved with their surroundings both as artists and researchers. In this case, our research generated a LOT of mathematical comparisons!!</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">I am thrilled that our students have the opportunity to study and appreciate authentic art in their school environment. We have quite a few murals on campus as well as this frieze, so I am planning to have students explore these, too. More later on this . . .</span>Christie - Fine Lineshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10418114130566362780noreply@blogger.com3
